There has been a pressing issue of late surrounding the Overwatch League. There are no women among any of the 12 Overwatch League teams. Despite the fact that we have seen a woman compete in the Overwatch World Cup and there’s top internationally recognised players like Barcode and 177 not a single one of them were recruited by any teams.
The lack of female presence has become a hot debate within the Overwatch community, along with the ongoing issues with harassment that also plagues gaming as a whole. We see woman competing at a TOP level, working the broadcast team at The Overwatch League and filling the arena, so why aren’t they playing?
Well that may finally be changing. Monday afternoon top level female player Geguri posted a video stating: “Regarding teams.. just know that I’m going to a foreign team. I got many offers.”
For those who don’t know Geguri, let me tell you a little bit about her. She is an 18-year-old from South Korea and is recognised as one of the best players in the world, she is said to be the best female player out there today. Geguri’s a former member of EHOME Spear and has most recently played with ROX Orcas.
Where will Geguri end up? She is currently following all 12 teams on Twitter and hasn’t dropped any clues. But if you dig a little deeper, you’ll see one team that sticks out above the rest. New York Excelsior’s head of players personnel, head analyst and two players follow Geguri. It can be argued that New York has a clear need for another off tank. Who’s Geguris best hero? Zarya.
Regardless of where she ends up, I just hope she makes it to the Overwatch League. There are a lot of women playing Overwatch, and a good number of them are just as good as the men who are playing professionally. It’s about time we see woman represented equally.
I will be keeping an eye out for when and if an announcement is made!
