Borderlands 3 Introduces Zane the Operative

The lovely folks over at Gearbox have unveiled the first of a series of trailers that dive into the playable characters of Borderlands 3. These give us a closer look at the characters, their skills and perhaps what we can expect of them from the game. They’ve started with Zane, tech expert, semi-retired corporate hitman and all around nice lad.

Zane the Operative is Borderlands 3’s resident tech expert, with an ingenious gadget at the ready for any life-or-death situation. Zane can equip two Action Skills at once, though choosing to do so will replace his ability to toss grenades. To help you decide if Zane is the right Vault Hunter for you, here’s a brief overview of his three skill trees: Doubled Agent, Hitman, and Under Cover. Will your Zane build be worthy of the Flynt family name?

The ‘Flynt’ family name part might sound familiar, as Flynt’s have shown up in Borderlands 1 and 2 as bosses and all round nasty dudes. Baron Flynt and Captain Flynt (Baron and Captain were, naturally, their first names) were very memorable fights, so it’s interesting seeing Zane being tied into that family tree, and how that could be expanded on in the game. Also, Zane was clearly a favourite, getting an actual normal name, but I am kind of sad he’s not called something like ‘Commander’ or ‘Skipper’.
Zane has all kinds of cool tricks up his sleeve, including a ‘digi-clone’ which will let him use two different action skills. We saw something similar in Borderlands The Pre-Sequel with Timothy, the Doppleganger, but the concept being expanded upon is pretty exciting.
