Being Victorian, the NRL isn’t exactly my priority. Being a shut-in nerd, any kind of sports ball goes over my head a little bit. Yeah, beefy peoples, get those balls into those goals, as is your prerogative(?)! What I do know, though, is video games. Which is why the partnership between LetsPlay.Live, one of Australasia’s biggest esports media outlets which develop, hosts and broadcasts esports events, and the NRL, the… rugby… thing(?), is enough to get my attention to sports ball for longer than 5 minutes. Awesome!
LPL and NRL (acronyms, yay!) are teaming up to bring you the League Royale, a special Fortnite event that will be part of the 2019 NRL Telstra Premiership Grand Final. Fans of one or both of these sport-based events will be able to qualify prior to the grand final for the fancy event online through the LPL platform, all for the chance to compete at the League Royale event, held in the ANZ Stadium live on the day of the NRL Grand Final. And for fans who just want to watch the action and engage in another place, the NRL Fan Fest in Martin Place, Sydney, will be held from Wednesday 2nd October through to Friday 4th October. That’s even more Fortnite (and sports ball) action!
Last year, LetsPlay.Live collaborated with the NRL in Auckland to promote the 2018 Post Season Test Matches, so they’ve got a proven track record with this kind of thing. Which means this time around is going to be even bigger and better, with players competing in the Fortnite event will all be vying to grab over $18,000 worth of prizes, prior to the NRL Telstra Premiership Grand Final kick-off (the inaugural important kicking of the sports ball). Prizes include everything from cash, tickets, flights, and merch through to premium experiences at the State of Origin in Adelaide in June 2020.
Andrew Abdo, Chief Commercial Officer of the NRL, said:
“We continue to develop and evolve our Grand Final week and this esports activation will add to the fan experience at NRL Fan Fest and on Grand Final day. Giving our fans the opportunity to play in front of ANZ Stadium, to be broadcast across Twitch, the NRL network and on the stadium big screens and to play for prizes that include our incredible behind the scenes experiences at Origin in Adelaide next year is an opportunity not to be missed,”
Duane Mutu, Managing Director of LetsPlay.Live, had this to add:
“We’re delighted to be collaborating with the NRL for one of our biggest partnership ventures to date. With incredible prizes, great content and an awesome event space planned, we’re confident that NRL fans and esports enthusiasts alike will be just as excited as we are. This is a monumental step towards bridging the gap between traditional sport and the digital movement.”
