Gamesplanation: Dead by Daylight

This is the start of a new series I’ll be writing, Gamesplanation. Often, I’ll find myself having to explain most of the games I play. So, I thought it’d be a great idea to write an overview of the games that other might not be too familiar with. We’ll start with one of my current favourites, Dead by Daylight. Although one of the top-selling games on Steam, many have never heard of the Behaviour Digital game. Here’s my explanation for Dead by Daylight.

Gamesplanation of Dead by Daylight

Dead by Daylight (DBD) is a multiplayer (4vs1) horror game. Four people take on the role of the survivors, trying to bring power back to the map. The surviving players have to complete generators while being stalked through the world by a real person playing as the ruthless killer.
This game will bring out the best and worst in you. It’s important to note that although survivors have to work together, this is not purely a cooperative game. At the end of the day, it is a competition between the survivors and the killers. Though watch out, everyone is an individual within the unit. You can choose to be as cooperative with your team as you’d like and rewards are given for helping out your teammates. However, by the end of it, it’s all about you and your survival.

Survivor

gamesplanation
In short, as a survivor, you’ll need to escape the map while being careful of the killer. Scout the map, find the generators randomly scattered around and repair 5 (or the number of survivors +1 if a player disconnects in the loading screen). Once you and your team complete 5 generators, find the exit, open it and get out.
As a survivor, you’ll have a third person view, this gives you the ability to look around corners and see where the killer might be. Every time you enter a level, you don’t know who the killer is, what map you’ll be in or where the objectives might be located. A certain killer might mean you’ll be safe in the house, but in the next game, you could be faced with a killer that can go through walls. No place is safe for survivors!
The game plays on the difference between cooperative and single-minded pursuit. Every game played (except customs made with friends) contributes to your survivor or killer rank. Do enough in a game, from distracting the killer to repairing generators and you’ll rise in the ranks. Don’t contribute to the game by hiding in a closet the entire game and you’ll lose your rank. Dead by Daylight puts you in an impossible situation with others and watches you and your team try to outwit each other, taunt each other and do horrible things to each other.

Killer

There’s a whole list of different killers that you can choose from. Each killer will have their own unique ability that gives them an edge in the game against the unsuspecting survivors. The killer’s task is to prevent the survivors from completing the generators and escaping.
Killers will have a first-person perspective. Certain advantages include power, speed and knowledge of the environment. If you play the killer, you’ll be constantly notified every time a survivor makes a mistake. If a survivor misses a skill check or performs a fast action, you’ll know where they’re located on the map. A panicking survivor will definitely make a mistake.
As you play the game, you’ll really see human things come out, and that’s what makes the game entertaining. Seeing people make horrible decisions because they’re freaked out and scared.

Where to Buy it

Dead by Daylight is available on Steam for US$9.99 (while it’s currently on sale, original price US$19.99), Xbox One and PS4 for AU$36.00.
You can also purchase the DLCs to unlock new characters. Even if you don’t have any of the DLCs you’ll still be able to run into the locked characters played by others within the game, you just wouldn’t be able to play them. Read more about the latest update Curtain Calls.
