Top 10 things to check out at PAX Australia 2017

First time at PAX Australia? Not sure where to go or what to keep an eye out for? No need to worry because we’ve got you covered! Here’s a list of activities in no particular order:

#1: Storytime opening keynote with Burnie Burns of Rooster Teeth

If you haven’t heard of Rooster Teeth, now’s a good time to check them out. Burnie Burns is a co-founder of Rooster Teeth and is most well-known for his work as the creator Red vs. Blue, a machinima web series from the early days of the web (2003, before Facebook even started).

#2: PAX AUS Indie Showcase

Be awesome and check out all the great Aussie talent on show at the Indie showcase booth. You can check out not just the games themselves but also talk with the developers. Just being there is a great way to show support for these indie games and their development teams.
Here’s a sample of some of the games in the showcase:

#3: The Omegathon

What is the Omegathon, you ask? Well, it’s an elimination tournament held at PAX for random attendees who have pre-ordered their tickets — these people are appropriately titled Omeganauts. The fun part? The games in the tournament could be just about anything: PAX Australia 2013 featured Giant Jenga and last year’s PAX Australia featured Western Press played with dance mats, of all controllers.

#4: The Twitch Booth

The Twitch booth, if anything like last year’s will be amazing. We’re still waiting to hear more from Twitch about what’s on the schedule but to get a good idea of what it’ll be like, here’s what was at last year’s Twitch booth:

  • Meet & Greets – Say hi to your favourite Aussie streamers, have a chat and maybe grab a quick selfie.
  • Intel Streamer Zone – Aussie streamers streaming straight from the Twitch stream booth. (Try and say that 10 times fast)
  • Twitch’s PAX Party – Fingers crossed ???? The Twitch party is another great opportunity for you to hang out and chat with other streamers and gamers.

#5: PAX Arena

You want esports? You got it! The PAX Arena will be featuring tournaments throughout the 3 days of PAX. If you haven’t been to an esports tournament before, do take the time to sit down, watch the show and be entertained.

#6: PARTYMODE World Championship presented by AGPN

The Australian Gaming Podcast Network (AGPN) will be running PARTYMODE, an hour-long event where 12 podcasters will battle it out to see who is the best gamer of them all. Here is how AGPN describes PARTYMODE:

Presented by AGPN, hosted by Ben Green and featuring a who’s who of gaming podcast royalty, PARTYMODE is a life changing event that will be jam packed full of laughs, suspense, tears and maybe a little blood.

#7: The 2017 State of Queer in Games Panel

Games aren’t all just pew pew pew lasers or “Least I got chicken”. More often than not, games are about the people who play it so why not learn more about your LGBTQ+ gaming fellows at this panel?

#8: Any store booth for great deals

Without playing favourites here, PAX is a great place to do some window shopping and even real shopping. Whether you’re visiting the booths for Xbox, HP, ASUS, Lenovo, HyperX or Razer to try out their gear or you’re visiting the PLE Computers booth to straight up buy new gear, PAX has got you covered. You’ll find that some non-store booths will be offering sweet deals like this one from The Gamesmen last year:

If you’re lucky, you may even stumble upon some free giveaways like this one from MSY:

#9: The ausretrogamer Classic Gaming Area

If you’re old enough to have owned an SNES, this section will be full of nostalgia for you. If you’re not old enough to have owned an SNES, you’ll find out about all of the joy that is retro gaming from old school arcade cabinets to good ol’ cartridge gaming goodness.

#10: The gotogame.temp927.kinsta.cloud panel!

Featuring our very own Phid McAwesome (@phidmcawesome) and Jack Huddo (@jackhuddo), this panel will be great for anyone who’s interested in working with brands.
